Boosting your Brand with Instagram

Posted by Rich on Thursday, April 12, 2012

Instagram has been in the news this week on account of it being sold for a ridiculous sum of money to Facebook. I've been using Instagram for the last few months and for those of you that don't know it's a photo-based iPhone or iPad app that edits your photos with a wide range of filters, frames and blurring options to turn the most humdrum of snaps into something punchy and fun.  Read More

We thought we'd have a bit of fun in the Hoot House this week and give a bit of love to our home town. The Power of Online Video

Posted by Rich on Thursday, November 17, 2011

It's been stated that video is an immensely powerful tool for any business to have on their website. The ability of it to interact with it's audience in a way that far exceeds text or imagery is well documented, and latest rumours even suppose that next year Google may only list websites in their rankings if they carry video.   Read More

First Look: Real Coconut Water

Posted by Rich on Monday, October 17, 2011

We're very excited about this project. We've just won the contract to be design guardians for Real Coconut Water in the UK and Europe. RCW is from Thailand and unlike other coconut waters it actually tastes good. This is because the coconuts are far sweeter in Thailand than they are in South America (where the other brands are made). We've got quite a lot of work to do on this project. The website is going to knock it out of the park - I mean just look how smashing the holding page looks. You're going to be seeing a lot of RCW so keep your eyes peeled.   Read More

Finding The Story Behind Your Brand

Posted by Rich on Wednesday, October 05, 2011

Born one of 12 in 1919, he spent his early childhood running around the streets of Hoxton, building boxcars, pulling girls hair, scrumping and generally scrapping around this part of London. From a tough working-class background, he was ordered by his Dad to take up boxing not only as a way to defend himself, but to instill a sense of honour and duty. This gladiator academy would stand him in good stead as he developed a taste for pugilism and embarked on a successful career in the ring that was cruelly cut short by Hitler invading Poland.  Read More

Vintage Cool - Trouser Press

Posted by Rich on Wednesday, August 17, 2011

I'm a sucker for all vintage packaging, but this caught my eye in the local thrift shop. Totally nuts for the typography - loving that arrow. The illustration is a total gong-show too. Monday Arvo Playlist

Posted by Rich on Monday, August 15, 2011

I didn't tweet or blog much last week, for two reasons. Firstly all the craziness that went on major English cities really didn't need any pithy comments from me, and secondly it was my little sons 3rd birthday, so I spent much of the later part of the week playing with dinosaurs, Batmobiles and trucks. We also had a big BBQ to celebrate, hence my delicate reintroduction this week.

I think it's a good chance to take stock and calm down today, hence the laid back vibe of the playlist. Go get yourself a daiquiri (personally I go lime. Tangy you say? I should coco), sit by your nearest infinity pool and get your chill on. http://open.spotify.com/user/richtarv/playlist/6NOef0LcvXk0TEHq7E5MNL.  Read More

The Friday Arvo Playlist - Cool 80's

Rebrand your brain - Amended

Posted by Rich on Thursday, July 28, 2011

I'd been aware for sometime that something wasn't right with my business. The work was still trickling in, if anything profits were slightly up and I'd been managing to coast the recession, but I'd become so insular and focused on getting the work out the door that I'd neglected all other areas of my life. I decided that a completely new approach was needed. I needed to re-brand - not just my business but my brain as well.  Read More

As the way of things, we won't be posting things tomorrow due to circumstances that will become clear next week. But, so as not to disappoint approximately 9 million people that got their freak on to the return of the Friday Arvo Playlist last week we've bought it forward a day. Transform *groans* your Marketing Campaign

Posted by Rich on Wednesday, July 13, 2011

I've recently flown back from France by Ryan Air, and in between being fleeced several euros for a cup of coffee, I couldn't help but notice the inside of the cabin was adorned with posters for Transformers: Dark of the Moon. The Importance of Good Photography

Where's Smoke?

Posted by Rich on Wednesday, June 22, 2011

Hello Sausage
Some of you know me as Rich from Smoke. The rest of you don't know me from Adam. Here's the deal. For the last decade I had a company called Smoke. When I started Smoke, I thought it would be cool to have an enigmatic one-word name that conjured up all sorts of sophisticated graphic design with a slick style. And it worked for a while. But over the last year or so I've been increasingly bored with that style of design. Everything was starting to look the same, and I came close to jacking it all in, but then didn't.   Read More
